Week 52: Paper-pieced alphabet

http://patchanddot.com/abc/

My biggest discovery as a quilter this year has been how much I love paper piecing. Maybe you can relate to this, but I was intimidated by paper piecing for so long. Once I tried it, though (via some classes by Carolyn Friedlander over at Creative Bug), I loved it. Completely un-scary, as it turns out.

Currently I'm working on creating a complete paper-pieced alphabet. You can see each new letter over on my Instagram and you can actually snag a free pattern for letters A, B and C right here.

Week 52: Stephanie of Patch and Dot

Hi everyone! I'm Stephanie of Patch and Dot and I'm really excited to be part of 52 Quilters. I'm based in Toronto, Ontario.

Quilting is something I've come to fairly recently but since giving it a try a few years ago it has quickly taken over the number one spot among my hobbies. I love the variety, and I love that, even though it's a craft that rewards precision, it's also weirdly forgiving (meaning, even the wonkiest of handmade blocks still has certain beauty). Most of all I love that, since learning to sew and building up a stash, I have the ability on a whim to sit down at my machine and make a gift for someone, and all kinds of functional objects for myself. This is an amazing kind of freedom for me.

Here are a few highlights from the past year or so.

As life gets faster, my projects seem to get smaller, and I've enjoyed making quite a few minis (for wall hangings) and doll quilts (the best gifts for littles) this year. This one I made using an improv technique I learned from Crazy Mom Quilts.

And this one I made using half square triangles to form parallelograms (tutorial here):

My main project right now is working on a paper-pieced alphabet. More on that later in the week but if you're curious I've posted a free pattern for the letters A, B, and C that you can download right here.

How did I get started? Like many others, it all started with a baby quilt. I had no idea what I was doing but luckily I chose to make a simple hand tied 9-patch for one of my nephews.

From there I moved onto my first "big" quilt, from a pattern by Sing All You Want. It gets a fair amount of picnic use and for that reason it's my favourite. Here's a crinkle-shot:

One last thing I love about quilting, and that's the community. Quilting has a history that's so much about community and communal work, and it's been amazing to see how this collective spirit translates in modern times into what seems to be one of the most active, generous group of makers on the Internet. It's been so fun to learn about my fellow quilters throughout the year and I'm so looking forward to sharing some of my work here and on Instagram.

Week 51 - Nikki of Baby Love Quilts

Hey everyone! I am Nikki from Baby Love Quilts and I am so excited to be apart of the @52quilters movement. I live in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan Canada with my husband Devon, our two adorable kids, Alexander who is 2, Violet who is almost 6 months old and our two large dogs Lucy and Rogue. Right now I have the wonderful pleasure of being on Maternity Leave until June of next year, but when I am not on mat leave, I work part time at our local Credit Union called Conexus as a Financial Service Representative, aka a Bank Teller. So needless to say I am taking full advantage of being able to grow my small business, Baby Love Quilts, all while taking care of my kids.

Xander and Violet
My love for sewing started as a little girl playing with my grandmas fabric scraps. My sisters and I would wrap them around Barbies to make clothes and would fight for the prettiest pieces. That then lead to me taking Home Economics in grade school, which really put the sewing bug in me. I have quilted for about 10 years, but have been sewing for almost 16. I used to sew clothes, and even took 2 years at a Fashion Design College, but after graduation I found myself working at our local quilt store The Quilt Patch and found my true calling, designing and creating quilts. I mean, its way easier getting a quilt to fit a bed, than getting a dress to fit a body!

One of my commissioned "Carry Your Heart" quilts featured in my friends nursery.
I remember making my first quilt, it was cut all by hand, I used a mixture of old jeans and cotton and I sewed it all on my grandmothers old table top Singer sewing machine. It was so heavy and I really didn't know what I was doing so I just sewed all the way around it using an old blanket as backing. So technically I made a really big blanket, but I was proud.

I made this quilt using an old baby quilt in honor of the infant who passed away.

Some of the quilting things that I have grown to love are:
- I love all solids, any designer and any color! I really feel that you can do so much with them
- Art Gallery Fabrics. These guys know their patterns. I have bought so much of AGF over the years and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon
- I love using low volume prints in my quilts. They are really fun to play with and are so much better than just plain white
- If I could have black and white stripped binding on every single one of my quilts, I totally would!
- I love applique. This is something that I try to incorporate into all of my quilts. You can do SOOO much with a fun image or name. I find that it really personalizes the quilts.
- I've always wanted to try paper piecing
- I love a challenge, I have made a quilts using so many different things. Everything from a wedding dress, an old baby quilt, an old baby blanket, baby clothes, receiving blankets and clothes from a loved one who has passed away.
- Charm packs are amazing things!

The quilt I made from a wedding dress
These are one of my favorite quilts to make. I call them my "Heartbeat Quilts' and I use
old baby clothes to make the heart. If you look carefully you can see a heartbeat quilted into the quilt.
My "Carry Your Heart" quilt, also featuring baby Violet.
Since I started sewing I never liked following patterns, which lead me to creating my own. Almost everything I make is my own design and I rarely make anything twice. Probably one of my favorite things about designing quilts is you can make them so personal and thoughtful. I love the process of coming up with something that either fits the nursery theme or something that is meaningful to the family. And there is nothing like putting the babies name on it, I just love that extra touch of love. That baby is going to have that quilt for a very long time and I love that I was a part of them growing up.

A good example of my love of applique.
This was a quilt I made for one of my friends new baby.
I started Baby Love Quilts almost 2 years ago in February 2015 after a lot of my friends and family suggested I start selling my quilts instead of just giving them away. I have made a lot of different things over the course of two years. Everything from, quilts, blankets, bibs, scarves, doll diaper sets, teething blankets, swaddle blankets and even some wall hangings. Right now I am really excited about the newest thing to come to Baby Love Quilts, and that is the Namesake Blankets. They feature your little ones name plus a fun image that makes it extra special. I have had people choose tractors because their grandpa is a farmer, a skull because their daddy rides a motorcycle and for my Xander, I chose a paw print because he loves Paw Patrol.

Since starting my small business I have made over 60 quilts, 100 blankets and way too many bibs to count. I am hoping one day that I will have grown big enough so I can stay home with my kids while they are still young, as many of you know, they don't stay small forever.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read a little about me. I hope you enjoy my time here at @52quilters.

Week 50: Bec of @skyberries

Hi there! I’m Bec and I’m so pleased to be taking over 52 Quilters this week. I live in Sydney, Australia with my hubby, three year old son and one year old daughter. Being a stay at home mum takes up the bulk of my time but whenever I find a quiet moment I go and hide in my crafty haven. My hubby calls it 'the study', but I'm slowly taking over... I started my first quilt almost six years ago and finished it five years ago - it took me nearly twelve months to work up the courage to quilt the darn thing. Nothing much has changed in that regard!

Making things is in my blood. My great grandmother was a court dressmaker in the 1920s and 30s and my Nanna (on the other side of the family) was rarely without some kind of textile project in her hands. My dad is a skilled engineer who can build or fix just about anything. Making things is hardwired into my DNA. I HAVE to make things. And I've always loved making. My mum tells me that before I could read I would pull kiddy craft books off the bookshelf and make projects just from looking at the pictures. Mum fostered that love of making by having a big box of crafty things in the cupboard; cardboard, kitchen roll tubes, scissors, glue, paint, it was all in there. Gradually I became interested in a variety of crafts and the collection in the cupboard grew until it took up a whole cupboard of its own, and then a cupboard and a shelf and then a cupboard and three shelves... you get the picture. I've done lots of crafts over the years, quilling, beading, card making, cross stitch, knitting, crochet, dressmaking but my current love is quilting.

My Dad was the one who taught me to use a sewing machine and various dress making skills (despite not being a sewist himself). Apparently pattern reading and clothing construction has a lot in common with metal fabrication - obviously! I used my sewing skills for making clothes and little things like bags, pillows and soft toys for the better part of a decade. I wanted to make a quilt - and even collected some quilting magazines - but I was scared of the precision I assumed was required to get all those little joins to match up. In 2010 I discovered the world of quilting blogs - “Oh Fransson” by Elizabeth Hartman and “Film in the Fridge” by Ashley were (and still are) two favourites - and the desire to quilt grew stronger than ever. In early 2011 I borrowed Material Obsession by Kathy Doughty and Sarah Fielke from the library and using all the wisdom contained therein I cut 100 6.5” squares and sewed them together to make my first quilt top. It was to my greatest joy when I discovered that although fabric is stretchy and unruly and tricky to be accurate with, it is also stretchy and forgiving and you can totally fudge things!

My first quilt!
By the time my son was born early in 2013 I had made 5 quilts - 2 throw sized and 3 cot sized. I was following a number of quilty bloggers and beginning to crave the gorgeous designer fabrics I saw in their quilts. And then I found Instagram. My son was a slow feeder so I spent hours each day stuck to the couch perusing quilt after endless quilt on my phone. And I knew I needed more! So at the end of 2013 I set up my little Instagram account as motivation, joined my first QAL, ordered my first parcel of designer prints and the rest is history!

These little churn dashes became a prize winning pillow in #mmrcushionpalooza

As it turns out, the thing that scared me the most about quilting, that being the accuracy required in piecing, has become my favourite part! I love planning projects, chopping up fabric and sewing it into a flimsy. The quilting part is not my favourite. I haven’t spent much time building my skills in this area and it’s definitely something I want to put more focus into over the coming years. I might just have a huge pile of unquilted flimsies to practice on!

One of my favourite WIPs

There are a few reasons that after trying so many different crafty pursuits quilting has remained my favourite to express myself creatively. The first is simply that I am driven to make things. I MUST make things, I was built to do so. In making a quilt I not only satisfy the urge to create, I also end up with a useful, practical end product. I like that! Secondly, I love colour and shape and I find fabric to be an excellent medium for exploring both of these elements. The third reason has a lot to do with my stage of life. As a mum to two little people, nothing stays done for very long in my home. Crumbs and toys abound on every surface and multiply twice as quickly as I can clean them up. However, when I make a quilt, it stays made! That is perhaps the most satisfying of all!

All the colours in my growing collection of economy blocks

In the coming year I am hoping to return to my sewing roots and resume garment making. I’ve made a few pairs of shorts for my little guy recently but I’d love to make some dresses for myself and my baby girl. I have a HUGE stack of quilt tops to quilt which will keep me very busy in the new year! But I’ll probably add in a new project or two. I just can’t keep away!

Bec x

Proof that I do occasionally finish a quilt!
